Recognizing Abuse
Abuse can take many forms—physical, emotional, verbal, financial, and digital. If you notice any of the following behaviors in your relationship, it may be time to seek help:
- Extreme jealousy or possessiveness
- Controlling your time, money, or social connections
- Verbal insults, threats, or humiliation
- Isolation from family and friends
- Unpredictable mood swings or explosive anger
- Blaming you for their actions or feelings
- Monitoring your phone, social media, or location
- Using force or intimidation during intimacy
- Threatening harm to you, your children, or pets
Preparing to Leave Safely
If you're planning to leave an abusive situation, gathering important items ahead of time can help protect you and your children. Consider packing:
- Identification: Driver’s license, State ID, Passports
- Legal documents: Birth certificates, Social Security cards, Marriage/Divorce papers
- Financial items: Debit/Credit cards, SNAP card, Cash, Bank info
- Medical cards and prescriptions
- Keys, phone, charger
- Clothing, hygiene products, comfort items
- Important photos, keepsakes, or valuables
