Who We Are

Agape House Inc. of Mountain View is a nonprofit organization with 501(c)(3) status, located in South Central Missouri. We depend on grants and donations to make services available for victims of domestic violence and their children. Agape House has served victims and their children for over 34 years.

Our Story

Agape House began in March 1991, when Joan Smith-Lawson retired as Mayor of Mountain View, MO after 20 years of service. Joan and her husband Gene had long welcomed victims into their home, recognizing the urgent need for a safe shelter. After retirement, Joan called a town hall meeting, and the community rallied together. A local businessman donated a house, volunteers renovated it, and a biker group built the security fence. The original shelter opened in August 1991 with 8 beds.

Today, Agape House operates shelters in two locations with a total capacity of 45 adults and children. The main facility is in northern Howell County, and the Satellite Shelter is in southern Texas County. Our newest addition is the Joan Smith-Lawson Resource Center, which provides outreach programs and public education.
